My guess is that someone used the time machine to go backwards but I'm not really sure how that thing works.
However:
1) I know its too late but why don't you have a backup? Time machine is a user backup solution. The disk is even in the same box (unless you're using that air thing).
2) Why does a student have access to your production server?
