Well then, dump this on his plate. He picked a toy platform to use as a database server. He lied about having backups. He doesn't know the basics. He doesn't want good things to be done. You have a clear line of responsibility here. He decided to put the business at risk in this way.Might be time to move server tasks like databases to a server rather than a Mac desktop. CentOS 7 would be ideal for a MySQL / MariaDB system.
We have it running on a Mac Mini with OS X server (dual harddrive) that we purchased from apple in May. Trust me I would very much rather it be on a Linux server (my other job that I built a web server for let me use CentOS 6.5), but my boss is a Mac person and doesn't understand Linux nor does he want to take the time. (He also won't let me install Spiceworks :( )
